These lay ministers are charged with caring for the altar, vestments, vessels, and altar linens of the parish. The members also prepare the sanctuary and nave for services. We currently have four teams that prepare for Sunday services and a fifth team that prepares for services during the week. All members share in preparation for funerals and weddings.
A wonderful lay ministry for worship, especially for young parishioners (typically grades 4-12). Acolytes participate in processions, light candles, help set up and clean the altar, assist clergy with various other tasks including incense, and also help some parishioners at steps toward the altar rail. Acolyte captains have responsibilities for the offertory and for altar bells. Training from the Acolyte Master required.
Christian Formation lay ministers volunteer to teach children’s Sunday School, assist with Children’s Chapel and The Bridge, and help supervise Fledgling and Youth events.
St. John’s offers 3 Sunday School classes - Godly Play for pre-K through 1st grade, Primary for 2 - 5th grade, and Intermediate for 6 - 8th grade. Sunday School is taught by pairs of teachers and uses the Godly Play and Episcopal Children’s Curriculum.Children’s Chapel and The Bridge are offered to children in pre-K - 8th grade during the 10:30am service. Fledglings and Youth are fellowship groups for all grade levels and meet on Sunday Evenings.
Our mission through the Hospitality Ministry at St. John’s is to share God’s love through fellowship by providing many opportunities for the parish to come together with family and friends. We strive to welcome new members and visitors to change them from strangers into friends. To accomplish this mission, we provide celebrations of religious holidays which include potluck meals, receptions, and parties. We strive to create and sustain programs to make the parish a welcoming community. We see it as our duty to organize, prepare and provide these events for the enjoyment of the parish and to reinforce our shared commitments to each other.
